Pickering War Weekend
24 October 2009
Friday 16th, Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th October 2009 became Friday 16th, Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th October 1943. Last weekend was the 17th annual war weekend in Pickering and on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Pickering high street was closed to traffic, and there were people dressed in 1940's costumes as land girls, nurses, soldiers and civilians. Local school children were issued with their own gas masks and were evacuated on the steam trains. The village of Levisham on the NYMR was occupied by the Germans and became known as Le Visham. There was even an unexploded bomb!
Some children being evacuated.
I loved how this little boy was sat on the sandbags having his lunch next to the "Dig for Victory" sign.
The ladies outfits were so colourful and dressy. The gentleman on the right was serenading passers by.
I doubt that Pickering has changed much since the war.
A lovely autumn scene.
